Second Grade Digital December Interactive Read Aloud Lesson

Do you need a way to teach your read aloud remotely?  These digital read aloud lessons that are used with Google Slides TM will help you do just that.  I have taken my Second Grade IRA Lessons and converted them into ready-to-go lessons that can be used with your virtual learners.  Each week contains five lessons that follow the same format each day.  The activities for each day vary based on the standard, and each daily task builds up to a final culminating task that is used for assessment of the focus standard.  I have made these so that they are super engaging for your students, and I hope they get your students excited for the holidays!  The stories used are Auntie Claus, How Santa Got His Job, How Santa Lost His Job, and The Carpenter's Gift.

Each lesson follows the following format:

-Daily Agenda (gives students an outline of your lesson and sets up the flow)
-Brain Warm-Up (learning or themed video embedded)
-Learning Goal
-Success Criteria
-Learning Posters for Standards or Skills
-Vocabulary (definition, sentence, illustration, and daily student task)
-Read Aloud (story embedded, teacher instructions, and text-dependent questions to ask)
-Independent Practice (standards-based daily task in which students responds to the text)
-Exit Ticket
-Wrap It Up (close your lesson and tie it to tomorrow's lesson)
-Student Self-Assessment

The first week uses the book Auntie Claus by Elise Primavera.  We actually went to see the play, too, last year at the Nashville Children's Theatre.  The story is about Santa's sister and her family.  The Kringle children are not grateful for their gifts, and Auntie Claus teaches them an important lesson.  That makes this the perfect book for practicing story recount and central message.

The independent practice slides can be assigned to your students.  They are editable, so students can type their responses and submit their work back to you.  On day one, students make a connection to the text which is a great hook at the beginning of the unit and still requires them to practice identifying key details and using text evidence.

You can see below the independent practice slides for the rest of the week.  The tasks build up to summarizing the text, which is another way for students to recount a story.  There is also a multiple choice assessment on Friday.

Students can also complete an exit ticket and self assessment each day to give you feedback on how they are doing with that standard.  I also always have my students do a self-assessment at the end of each lesson. This allows them to reflect on how they are doing with that skill and gives me feedback on who needs additional help the following day or at small groups.

This story is so sweet!  I promise it will make you cry, so be prepared.  This is the story behind the first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center in New York City.  The last text also takes place in NYC, so it's a nice connection.  We use this story to practice describing how characters respond to major events and challenges.  The main character faces some serious challenges in this text but responds in such a resilient way that is so inspiring for readers.

We focused on describing Henry using character traits on day one.  This gives them insight on his character and helps them understand why he responded the way he did.  You can see the rest of the independent tasks below.  They all lead up to practicing describing how Henry responds to the major events and challenges from the text.

Finally, we have two books for the third week of December before holiday breaks.  We spend two days on How Santa Got His Job and two days on How Santa Lost His Job.  On day five, your kids can vote on which book you read or just listen to both!  You will focus on asking and answering questions using key details by being ELF DETECTIVES!

I focused on asking questions on the first day of the read aloud and answering different types of questions on day two.  I got them excited to do both by giving them the job of Elf Text Detectives!  It was a fun tie in to the story and Santa getting his job.

I sell these separately, in a digital bundle, and included with the printable December version.  I tried to post them that way to fit everyone's changing needs.  Thank you so much for the feedback on these lessons!  My goal was to give you a resource that you could easily implement in your online instruction that will be engaging and cover your grade level standards.  I hope they are helping you and your students!  Merry Christmas!
