Homographs Grammar Activities and Games

homographs activities and games

I LOVE seeing my students having fun while learning or practicing a new skill.  If I could turn everything into a game, I would!  I started creating these games a few years ago when I taught second grade, but then the next year, I moved to kindergarten and stopped.  Currently, there are only five games in my shop, homographs, pronouns, adjectives, synonyms, and antonyms.  Super random, I know!  ;)  I will be working on creating more for the rest of the skills.  I have updated all of the current ones in my shop.  I have added games and updated all of the activities.  These are designed to be no prep, just print and go.  You may want to laminate them for durability and future use, but some of the activities are just no prep printables.  The other goal of these was to fill a week long unit on the skill with daily practice and then to turn the games into learning center activities for the next week for continued practice of the skill.

Let's take a look at what activities are included for homographs!  Homographs are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings.  They are super tricky words for our little ones!  I have included a mini poster and anchor charts that you can print as posters for student reference.  One has the most common homographs and the other is for creating an anchor chart with visuals with your students.  You could draw pictures to match the different homographs.  I show you in the resource how to print as a poster in Adobe on your regular printer.

The flapbooks below are great for practicing the different meanings of the homographs.  You can differentiate on this one by having them draw illustrations of the two homographs under each flap or use them in two different sentences under each flap.

My students are obsessed with reading the room and so am I!  It gets them up and moving and requires some critical thinking.  They are on the hunt for words that are homographs.  They record the homograph and sketch out pictures to match.  The anchor chart will be a big help on this, so that they have some support on what to look for.

For Spin a Homograph, students spin the spinner and record the homograph they landed on.  I want my students to get lots of practice writing complete sentences, so they have to use both meanings in two different sentences.  This is a great assessment, too!

If you want to differentiate, students can use the one below to only write one sentence per spin.

Another obsession that my students have is with board games.  I can put anything in the form of a board game, and they are engaged!

The puzzles below are really the only thing that needs prepped.  I printed these on cardstock and laminated them.  You will just have to cut these out.  They have to match the two meanings to the homograph.  There are two sets included.

  6. Just right points?I would observe that as any individual who actually doesn’t write on blogs a lot (if truth be told, this can be my first post), I don’t think the term ‘lurker’ may be very becoming to a non-posting reader. It’s now not your fault in the least , however possibly the blogosphere could come up with a better, non-creepy identify for the ninety% people that revel in reading the content . change the voice
