October Morning Meeting Activities and Slides

Raise your hand if October is your favorite month in the classroom?! I know that it is mine!  It's probably safe to say that our students really love it, too.  I have lamps all around my classroom.  I love to have the overhead lights off in the morning with only the lamps on as students begin their day.  It automatically provides a very calming environment.  Add in these October Morning Meeting slides, and you have a got a fun and spooky way to start their morning each day in October.  I will take you through how I do morning meeting and what I choose to include with only a limited amount of time each day.

I only have about 15-20 minutes typically to have a morning meeting.  My goal with morning meeting is to get students' days started off on a positive note, build community, give students a preview of the day, and to give students an opportunity to spiral review previously learned content.  Since I only have a short time to do this each morning, I cannot get to all of the slides in my morning meeting everyday.  I pick and choose which ones we will do each day.  As I show you the different components, I will explain how and when I choose which slides to cover each morning.

We always sing the intro song for the month.  I do not go into the whole responsive classroom greeting each morning because of time constraints.  I typically tell them good morning, and they also tell their carpet partner good morning.  I also use this time to go over our classroom rules and any changes to our schedule for the day.  We will do the song that is linked 2-3 times during the week.  They love this pumpkin song!

I included five different share topics.  I only do this one day per week.  I like to do the share on Mondays.  They share with their partner, and then I choose three students to share with the class.  This is a good time to work on those speaking and listening standards.

The calendar slide is a link to Starfall's calendar.  Theirs is my favorite because it's so interactive.  It allows you to add birthdays and special events to the calendar.  I have found that doing this everyday helps build community with my students.

I think number of the day is super helpful, especially for first grade.  If you have the time, I would definitely do this each day.  You can cover so many different standards.  The secret number slide is a great way to review all of those math standards.  I secretly choose a secret number on the 120 chart.  I then give them clues such as, this number is less than 80 but greater than 50, it is an even number, and if you add the digits, you get the sum of 12.

(You have probably noticed the blue lightbulbs on the slides.  Those are all links to songs or videos on YouTube.)

Each day, I choose a student who is engaged and respectful to be the meteorologist.  I draw their number from a cup for that day.  We sing a weather song that is linked, and the meteorologist checks the weather out our back door.  They then give us the weather report for day on our class microphone, which we add to our graph.  I always ask them questions about the graph to incorporate our graphing standards.  I also link your local weather so that you can add the temperature.

Like I said before, I like to throw in some quick spiral review into morning meeting.  I will choose one of these each day for review.  I try to include phonics, math, and reading standards for this review.  This month, we go over related facts, nouns, plural nouns, consonant blends, and retelling a story.

I link Storyline and Starfall for the texts.  I choose one that is quick.  Starfall is best for this, because they also have books listed by spelling patterns.  This way, you can have students chorally read the story reviewing those previously learned spelling patterns.  Then, we just go over the characters, setting, and major events with our partner or as a whole group.

I always include a morning message slide for you to type your morning message to students if you do that.  I would maybe do this once a week in my room.  It's great on Monday to give them a preview for what they will be learning that week.

Finally, we end with a fun song or mindfulness exercise.  This month, I linked the song Spooky Spooky.  It's always a classroom favorite!  It's a great calming song to end morning meeting with.  If you want to incorporate mindfulness at this time, I highly recommend Cosmic Kids Zen Den or Class Dojo's short videos.

If you would like your whole month of morning meetings planned for you each day, click HERE or below to check this one out.  It's definitely one of our favorite parts of the day!  It has made such a difference in getting students in the right mindset for learning each day and has always made us closer as a class.  I have these made for each month of the year and sold in a yearlong bundle.  This year, I am updating each month's morning meeting prior to being taught, so come back each month to download the latest version.  Thank you so much for stopping by!
