There are so many great gingerbread man stories out there! Tough Cookie might be one of the cutest though! Tough Cookie thinks he is a sugar cookie, but he finds out differently in the end. It follows the traditional storyline of the other versions which makes it fun to compare and contrast to the others. I have created enough activities for each day of a full week to incorporate into your read aloud, including printable and DIGITAL. I think it would be fun to open each lesson listening to a different version of the story on YouTube to get that practice comparing and contrasting different versions of the same story. You could also use that story to practice the skill for the day. It's a great way to model the skill, as well.
I printed these text-dependent questions on cardstock and tied a little ribbon around them. You can use these during your read aloud each day. To keep students engaged, I always have them discuss the question with their partner first before we talk about it as a whole group.
I love to make gingerbread man ornaments with my class! You could make these to pair with the story with this super easy recipe or you could make the salt dough ornaments. It's a great way to tie in writing that week. I have included a planning page and the writing paper. Making the ornaments helps to give the students a concrete visual for the writing steps.
Since we typically do our running records in December, it's a good time to practice story retell. I have not only included graphic organizers for each day, but also a poster you can print for reference for each skill.
Poor little Tough Cookie faces many problems in the story. You can relate this to the retell and may want to do this before you do the retell of the story.
There are also lots of cause and effect relationships throughout the story, so this graphic organizer is great for recording those.
Tough Cookie faces challenges and learns a lot about himself by the end of the story. Students will describe the challenges he faces and how he responds to those challenges.
Your students can make these simple cookie crafts to attach to one of the responses. These will make a super cute display in the hallway!
