Comparing and Contrasting with the Three Little Pigs

We keep hoping for snow here in middle Tennessee.  We got so close yesterday, but nothing!  Boo!  While wishing for snow last week, our comprehension skill focus was on comparing and contrasting.  You may be familiar with this common core standard:

RL 2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

I decided to teach this using The Three Little Pigs!  Who doesn't love those little guys?!!!

I made a little packet similar to my other reading comprehension packets for my littles to learn how to compare and contrast more than one version of the same story.

I divided my class into 4 groups.  Each envelope contained a version of the story.  I actually modified the activity for my class.  I just read the book aloud to the whole group each day.  Each group kept their response books in the envelope and could pull them out for easy access each day.  There are directions on the back of the envelopes.  You could rotate the books among the 4 groups over the span of 4 days.

Each day they filled out a story map over the book we read which I made into little booklets.  Print a page a page for each of the four versions.

As we read them, I would make whole group Venn Diagrams to show them how to compare and contrast the different versions.  By Friday, they were ready to do this independently, which I used as an assessment.

We also discussed how the character of the wolf was portrayed differently in The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs and The Three Pigs.

You can find all of these activities and more in my packet below.  I must say my class really enjoyed all the versions of the three little pigs stories.  They were laughing hysterically and couldn't wait to hear the next version.

There has been a major update to this pack!  If you already, own it, please download the newer, way better version! :)  Click below to check it out!!!
